How Tip Is Calculated
Three simple formulas power every result in this calculator:
Tip Percentage Guide
- 10% โ Below average. Use for genuinely poor service.
- 15% โ Standard. Acceptable for average service at sit-down restaurants.
- 18% โ Good. Common default for many restaurants that add gratuity automatically.
- 20% โ Great. The most common tip for good service in the US.
- 25%+ โ Exceptional service, or when you want to show extra appreciation.
Who Do You Tip?
- Restaurant servers: 15โ25% of pre-tax bill
- Bartenders: $1โ2 per drink, or 15โ20%
- Food delivery: 10โ20%, minimum $3โ5
- Taxi / rideshare: 15โ20%
- Hotel housekeeping: $2โ5/night
- Hair salon: 15โ20%
Tipping Outside the United States
Tipping customs vary significantly by country. Using US norms abroad can cause confusion, and in some places is actually considered rude:
- Canada โ Similar to the US: 15โ20% is standard at restaurants.
- United Kingdom โ 10โ12.5% is typical. Many restaurants add a "service charge" automatically โ check before tipping again.
- Europe (France, Germany, Spain) โ Tipping is appreciated but not expected. Rounding up the bill or leaving small change (5โ10%) is common.
- Japan โ Tipping is generally not practiced and can be considered impolite. Excellent service is a cultural standard, not something paid extra for.
- Mexico โ 10โ15% is standard at restaurants. In tourist areas, 15โ20% is appreciated. Always tip in local currency when possible.
- Australia โ No tipping requirement, but 10% is appreciated for good service at restaurants.
What If the Service Was Poor?
This is genuinely debated. A few honest perspectives:
- If the issue was with the kitchen, not the server โ Tip normally. Servers don't control food speed or quality in most restaurants.
- If the server was rude or inattentive โ A reduced tip (10%) is a clear signal without being punitive. Leaving nothing is rarely constructive.
- If the experience was genuinely unacceptable โ Speak to a manager before reducing or skipping a tip. It gives the restaurant a chance to respond.
- In restaurants with auto-gratuity (18โ20% added for large parties) โ You can ask for it to be removed if service was genuinely poor, but this is uncommon.
